A Sneak Peek: The Seiko 5 Sports series watches, offering exceptional value, will guide you when you’re lost.
The classic military watch layout is enhanced by a compass bezel and luminous numerals and markers, making it even more practical.
It’s safe to say that Seiko has spared no expense in giving the 5 Sports series a fresh direction. Initially inspired by the SKX series of sports watches, the series has evolved into one of the brand’s most diverse collections. Along the way, we’ve witnessed GMT watches, collaborations with brands like HUF and Pepsi, gold-plated models, and military-inspired designs. Recently, the 5 Sports series welcomed four new military-style watches: HDB006, HDB007, HDB008, and HDB009, all equipped with a compass bezel. The compass bezel is typically a signature feature of Seiko’s Prospex outdoor collection, making its appearance in the more affordable Seiko 5 Sports series all the more striking.
These new Seiko 5 Sports Field watches remain classic tool watches, centered around a clean and legible dial. Seiko has equipped these watches with prominent Arabic numeral hour markers, date and day displays, and 13-24 hour scales. The bezel is perhaps the most striking highlight, but it’s not the only upgrade. Seiko has also coated the Arabic numeral hour markers with LumiBrite, a feature many felt was lacking in earlier Seiko 5 Field watches. Furthermore, these new watches feature 100-meter water resistance and the tried-and-tested 4R36 automatic movement, adding more practicality to one of the most affordable collections in Seiko’s lineup.
Compass bezels are uncommon, especially in watches at this price point. However, Seiko does have several models with compass bezels, such as the Tortoiseshell, Mountaineering, and the Prospex Field Compass SRPD31K1. Unlike dive bezels used for telling time, compass bezels provide approximate direction. The bezel is marked with east, west, south (north indicated by a luminous dot), as well as southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest, and is used in conjunction with the sun’s position. In the Northern Hemisphere, point the hour hand towards the sun and rotate the bezel until the south marker is centered between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock position. In the Southern Hemisphere, point the 12 o’clock marker towards the sun and center the north marker between the 12 o’clock position and the hour hand. Once aligned, the bezel provides approximate directional indication. fake men watches
The bidirectional rotating steel bezel features a diamond-knurled edge for easy grip and adjustment. The bezels of HDB006 and HDB007 are made of brushed steel, while HDB008 and HDB009 feature brown and black coatings respectively, giving them a practical style and unique personality. As mentioned earlier, all four watches have a luminous pearl at the 12 o’clock position to indicate north.
This Seiko 5 Sport watch features a 41mm diameter, 13.2mm thickness, and 48.5mm lug spacing stainless steel case. Although on the larger side, the shorter lugs and case profile make it comfortable to wear on the wrist. The wrist circumference shown in the image is approximately 18.5-19 cm, for your reference. In addition, the watch features a Hardlex tempered glass crystal, a mineral glass case back, a push-pull crown, and 100-meter water resistance.
Early Seiko 5 military watches only had luminescent square hour markers, which would become dim in low light. The new watches, however, have LumiBrite coating applied to the numerals, hands, and markers. This seemingly minor change is significant for a watch designed primarily for legibility. Today, these watches are more practical and reliable, indispensable tools for adventures. Regarding dial colors, the HDB006 has a black glossy dial, while the HDB007 has a white dial. The HDB008 has a khaki green sunburst brushed dial, and the HDB009 presents the same style with a brown dial. www.moon-watch.co.uk/
Internally, it is powered by Seiko’s in-house 4R36 movement. This automatic movement vibrates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, has a power reserve of approximately 41 hours, and features hour, minute, second, day of the week, and date displays. We recently saw it also featured in the PADI 60th Anniversary Prospex dive watch HBB002: this further confirms Seiko’s extensive use of this classic movement across its product line.
The new Seiko 5 Sport series watches continue the series’ tradition of high value for money. The HDB006 and HDB007 feature a three-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp, while the HDB008 and HDB009 come with green and brown nylon straps, respectively. All four Seiko 5 Sport watches have 20mm wide lugs. www.perfectwrist.co
