Audemars Piguet’s Code 11.59

New collection embraces the past

Audemars Piguet’s Code 11.59 series launched in January 2019 to mixed reviews. This is not uncommon in the haute horlogerie world, especially when one of the big names produces a model that is different from its classics. In fact, the AP’s now-iconic Royal Oak and Offshore series also had a rocky start.

Created Code 11.59 to replace the discontinued Jules Audemars series. It incorporates features from previous collections of the Swiss brand. There’s also the more traditional side, like the tricks the manufacturer has for combining different shapes inside the case.

Back in the 1920s, Audemars Piguet was one of the leaders in unconventional geometric design. Thin bezels and curved glass also hinted at earlier models, considered groundbreaking at the time. Especially for traditional, long-established Swiss watchmaking brands.

The unique and bold style of the Royal Oak is also present in the new Code 11.59 collection. For example, these watches feature an octagonal case and hexagonal screws. This new collection very clearly adheres to the brand’s history of experimenting with form and design. As their ad says:

“To break the rules, you have to master them first.”

Code 11.59 has a high level of sophistication and precision. The ultra-thin round bezel sits on the octagonal strap with brushed curved corners. The skeletonized lugs extend from the bezel to the caseback, not physically bound, just one surface is flush with the other.

“This collection requires new tools, skills and techniques to achieve extraordinary technical and aesthetic sophistication. Guideline 11.59 is about human challenges.”

As part of the collection, Audemars Piguet fake has released several reference products: Self-winding Chronograph, Perpetual Calendar, Skeleton Tourbillon, Self-winding Flying Tourbillon, Grand Sonnery Carillon Super Sonnerie, Minute Repeater Super Sonnerie and Automatic on the chain.

Both watches feature a hyperboloid sapphire crystal with a dome-shaped inner surface and a vertical curve at the top from 6 o’clock to 12 o’clock. It should add depth and perspective, enhancing the visual aesthetic of these timepieces.

Lacquered dials with sunburst patterns in blue, burgundy, purple and light and dark grey are also typical of the collection. They offer elegant, polished finishes. The aventurine dial on the perpetual calendar is reminiscent of the stars.

We’ll have to wait and see how the replica Code 11.59 line sells against the rest of the Audemars Piguet line. The Swiss brand hopes their new collection will follow its predecessors and make up for a slow start.
