As a jeweler of royals and rappers, Jacob & Co. is behind some of the most daring timepieces in the watch industry. Although its gem-encrusted watches have kept the brand in the public eye, Jacob & Co. has used its fashion sense for complex watches that are not suitable for the faint-hearted.
An extreme example of its ultimate taste, Twin Turbo Furious, was launched earlier this year, which not only superimposes complicated functions such as the minute repeater, chronograph and double tourbillon, but also handles it in an exotic way. The minute repeater is decimal, while the tourbillon regulator is flying, three-axis and high-speed.
This powerful watch is actually a follow-up to the original model in 2016. It is just a Twin Turbo; the “Furious” suffix refers to the addition of a single-button chronograph with a reference time difference indicator. This is the third unusual Complication. In short, it is a timepiece that people who tend to be humble might describe as quite a lot of watches. In fact, it can be said to be a veritable watch. Complications live as big as a case.
Unusually, the Twin Turbo Furious movement was designed by Le Cercle des Horlogers, an expert based in Neuchâtel, instead of Ateliers 7h38, which is responsible for the production of most of Jacob & Co.’s complex watches.
The spherical trapezoidal case alone is composed of an amazing 88 parts, 57 mm wide, 52 mm long between the lugs, and 17 mm high. The picture shows an all-black prototype with diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated titanium and carbon composite material on the side, but the mass-produced watch is actually a combination of red gold and carbon fiber, which makes the watch even more eye-catching. However, titanium and carbon composite watch cases are available as custom orders.
On the right side of the case is an unusual crank used to wind the movement, while at the other end is a slider that activates the minute repeater. The top of the case is a wide smoked sapphire glass, curved downward at the front edge of the case to conform to its curvature, and the dial itself is also made of sapphire crystal. The most striking feature of this watch is a pair of three-axis flying tourbillon adjusters, which are located at the bottom of the dial (with a small power reserve indicator in the middle). Unlike traditional tourbillons that rotate around a single axis, a three-axis tourbillon rotates around three different axes at the same time. In an improvement to the early twin turbocharging, the tourbillon has been accelerated. Both spin like crazy-it takes 24 seconds to spin on the first axis, 8 seconds on the second axis, and 30 seconds on the third axis.
Multi-axis rotation means that each balance wheel will never be in the same position, so theoretically it is not affected by any gravity. The two tourbillons are connected by a differential to produce a single average speed, making the movement’s timing more stable than a single regulator. But most importantly, the tourbillon provides the extremely eye-catching visual spectacle expected by very large watches.
Twin Turbo Furious is also equipped with a decimal minute repeater, which may be suitable for this significantly improved watch. The decimal system is a modern invention and is more intuitive, because the tap of time is like the way an analog watch reads it. Jacob & Co. Twin Turbo Furious luxury
The decimal minute repeater will not tell the time, tell the time and report the time like the traditional minute repeater, but tell the time, report the minutes by 10 minutes, and tell the time by the minute, making it easy to understand. Like many modern minute repeaters, it has a built-in safety mechanism that can break away from the time setting mechanism when reporting the time, and vice versa.
The third complication is the single-button chronograph. Its structure is quite traditional, relying on a column wheel and a horizontal clutch. But associated with the chronograph is the most novel complication in the watch: the reference time difference indicator. It is inspired by the timing panel used in racing cars to show drivers the difference between their reference lap time and the actual lap time.
The reference time is set by the crown and displayed in two adjacent holes at six o’clock (the “Board” position in the figure below). The larger numbers show the minutes, and the aperture on the right shows the seconds, up to 5:59.
Once the chronograph is started and stopped, the “pit plate” wheel surrounding the dial will indicate the time difference between the recorded time and the reference time. The eye-catching movement is the hand-wound movement JCFM05, which runs at 3Hz and has a power reserve of 50 hours. It is composed of a staggering 832 parts.
From the back, the structure of the movement looks as complicated as it actually is. This style is reminiscent of Richard Mille and Audemars Piguet’s concept watches, but still very interesting.
Its structure is quite symmetrical, with the hammer of the decimal minute repeater at the top center. Right below is the timing device, including the column wheel on the left, and the adjuster of the repeater is directly opposite. At the bottom are a pair of gold-plated hollow wheels that drive the tourbillon.
The movement decoration has also been carefully designed, the hand-beveled plywood has a black polished surface, the wheels have a round texture, and a polished jewellery countersink.
Jacob & Co. Twin Turbo Furious is a limited edition, made of red gold and carbon fiber composite materials (model TT200.40.NS.NK.A). It is housed in a huge box similar to a super sports car.
