De Bethune DB28 is the perfect embodiment of the brand’s watchmaking spirit-space-age design, keen and creative craftsmanship make innovative watchmaking a reality, and at the same time has traditional advanced watchmaking craftsmanship. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of this iconic figure in the independent watchmaking world, De Bethune launched three new timepieces that brought together the essence. Launched in 2010, the DB28 perfectly embodies the philosophy of De Bethune, especially its unique case with floating lugs (variable geometry to fit the owner’s wrist) and a 12 o’clock crown. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the series, De Bethune opened a new chapter with three new interpretations, exploring the same theme: ultra-thin. For Denis Flageollet, the mastermind of De Bethune, ultra-thin “is a self-evident evolution. It has nothing to do with amplification, but the essence of distilling DB28.”
The first version directly references the first and most basic DB28. DB28XP is the absolute futuristic style of ultra-thin watches. This monochrome metal sculpture transforms the material into a fascinating life mechanism. Various shapes and layers reveal the space-age architecture made of titanium. Every metal part, including the iconic triangular motherboard, is finished to reflect light. The guilloche pattern adds depth. The hour markers are polished spheres. Through the opening, the titanium balance with gold inserts can be seen, and it is held under the round, finished bridge.
From a technical point of view, the manual winding movement incorporates a number of innovative technologies of the brand. It is equipped with De Bethune hairspring with flat terminal curve, silicon escape wheel or De Bethune triple Pare-Chute shock absorption system. It runs at a speed of 28,800vph, and its self-adjusting double barrels ensure a 6-day power reserve.
Most importantly, the watch uses a completely redesigned case, which not only retains the “floating ear” comfort, but also adapts to a thinner case (now 7.2 mm, previously 9.3 mm). The bending degree of the strap is more obvious and accord with ergonomics. The screw-in crown at 12 o’clock is inspired by pocket watches. The “bullet” of the lug has been redesigned. Looks good on the wrist, if it feels good.
The second DB28XP is another new result of the repeated De Bethune theme, which is obsessed with reproducing the most beautiful night sky. DB28XP Starry Sky is made of ultra-light mirror-polished titanium metal with a unique visual effect. The surface of the blue titanium dial is engraved with many micro grooves and inlaid with numerous gold needles, which are carefully passed through one by one. This creates a fascinating optical effect that increases with the change in metal reflection.
The dura mater on the dial is not random. Customers can choose the date, hour and location of the sky, and then De Bethune draws the corresponding sky map.

Directly inspired by the DB28 Digitale, this watch features an elegant and classic white barley grain guilloché dial, highlighted by a blue polished titanium hour ring. At 6 o’clock, the tourbillon beats with 36,000 vibrations per hour. The light weight cage (0.18gr) rotates every 30 seconds. It contains 63 components-the lightest component weighs less than 0.0001gr.
The fast-rotating tourbillon, the ultra-light cage and the high-frequency balance have the same design goals, which are to maximize the efficiency of the tourbillon and compensate for the interference caused by the movement of the wrist.
The back cover of the watch represents our solar system. The first DB28 watch is a tribute to the head of the Orient, the highest honor of the Geneva International Watch Awards (GPHG). The location of the planet is the night sky position over Geneva when the award is given on November 19, 2011.
